Six things not to do in a Chaoshan itinerary: what goes wrong, why, and the fix
This page does not list what is worth seeing; it lists what cannot be arranged this way. Each of the six has a wrong plan, the reason it fails, the consequence and the fix, and every fix lands on a particular day. Two more things that are not taboos but worth knowing come at the end, with five checks before setting out.
Three rules first
All six follow from these three. Learn them and you can judge combinations not listed here.
- Cross a city line once a day. Chaozhou, Shantou and Jieyang lie 30 to 47 km apart, and a leg costs one to one and a half hours including waiting and city traffic. Two crossings in a day hand a quarter to a third of it to the vehicle.
- Your station sets the order. From Chaoshan station, start or finish in Chaozhou or Jieyang; from Shantou station, in Shantou; from Jieyang airport, put Jieyang first or last. Plan against the station order and the last day is spent catching something.
- On days with a crossing, a climb or a county run, schedule nothing else major. Nan ao needs the bridge, Huangmanzhai the hills, Daoyun Lou the mountain road; such days have little slack, and adding another stop is a gamble.
Six absolute taboos
Each reason states why it fails, not that it might. Where times and bookings matter, the entry point to re-check is given at the end.
Taboo 01 Nan ao Island and Chen Cihong Residence in the same day
The wrong plan Cross the bridge in the morning, turn back at noon, reach Longdu in Chenghai by three for the mansion, and be back in Shantou by night.
Entry to Nan ao over the bridge must be booked. Since 2 October 2026 the Nan ao Changxing mini-program has cut the day into five bands — 0—6, 6—10, 10—14, 14—18, 18—24 — and cars without a booking cannot enter.
What happens At best you stop twice on the island and see half a courtyard; at worst the booking lapses and you are held at the Laiwu Bay holding area, unable to enter at all. The return jams again and dinner goes too.
The right plan Give Nan ao a whole day, better with a night, and collect Chenghai on the way out next morning. The mansion, Zhanglin old port and Qianmei village are one line: half a day to a day. If you must cut, cut the mansion and keep the island.
Taboo 02 The Chaozhou old city and Xiaogongyuan in one day
The wrong plan Bridge, temple and Paifang Street in the morning, drive to Shantou at noon, arcades in the afternoon, back to Chaozhou for the light show at night.
Both are a full day’s worth. The protected sites in the Chaozhou old city stand within walking distance, three to four hours for the loop and half a day with two museums; Xiaogongyuan is a radial district where the routes around the memorial pavilion wind, and Xidi lies beyond it. The cross-city leg between them takes 45 to 60 minutes each way.
What happens You only walk at both, entering no museum at all; the show starts at 20:00, and coming back from Shantou you meet the crowd leaving it.
The right plan Take one city a day; the three lines are on the one-day page. For both, take two days: a full day each, two nights, and put the crossing between the nights.
Taboo 03 De an Li and Nanyan monastery in one day
The wrong plan De an Li in Hongyang in the morning, Nanyan at Nanxi in the afternoon, back to Shantou at dusk.
Both are in Puning but point different ways. De an Li, in Hongyang, is Fang Yao’s fortified residence: about 40,000 square metres and over seven hundred rooms. Nanyan monastery stands on Feifeng ridge at Dengfeng, Nanxi, rising with the hill, so the walk from gate to hall is uphill. Between the two
What happens You see one ring of De an Li, climb halfway up Nanyan and turn back, and hit the evening rush into Shantou.
The right plan Pair De an Li with the Hongyang old town (the old streets of the Puning county seat): half a day to a day. Nanyan takes half a day alone, or a day with the Sanshan Guowang temple at Hepo in Jiexi — but you get back late, so keep it off your departure day.
Taboo 04 Huangmanzhai on the departure day
The wrong plan Waterfalls in the morning of the last day, train or plane in the afternoon.
Huangmanzhai sits in the Jiexi hills; from Jieyang city the road is provincial road plus hill road, hours each way. The site is a gorge boardwalk past five cascades, and you return the way you came. Mountain weather does not move with the city’s: one rain can close the road or the site.
What happens One hold-up and you miss it; catch it and you watch the clock, seeing two of the five cascades.
The right plan Put Huangmanzhai mid-trip with a night in Jiexi; on the departure day keep only Jinxian Gate and the Confucian temple in Rongcheng, or simply go.
Taboo 05 Guangji Bridge as the evening finish
The wrong plan Put the bridge last in the afternoon and reach the bridgehead at five.
Guangji Bridge has three times, not one closing time: sales stop, boarding stops, and the pontoon boats come apart. In summer admission stops at 17:00 and boarding at 17:30, earlier in winter; once on, you must walk the full li of the bridge to leave at the far side.
What happens Sales have stopped and you cannot enter; or you get on and are turned back halfway.
The right plan Put it first in the morning or after lunch, and end the afternoon at the Han Wengong Shrine or Paifang Street. Read the notice at the bridgehead; do not time it by a guide.
Taboo 06 Leaving the same night after the light show
The wrong plan Watch the show at 20:00 at the bridge, then go straight to the station.
The light show starts at 20:00 and runs about ten minutes, with a 21:30 extra on weekends and holidays; for twenty minutes after it ends, the east bank is the most crowded spot in the city. The last intercity and express departures do not wait for it.
What happens No taxi, or a taxi and a missed train.
The right plan Stay in the old city that night and walk back. If you must leave, check the last departure, allow forty minutes, stand on the gate side, and walk against the crowd when it ends.
Two things that are not taboos but worth knowing
- Daoyun Lou lies north in Raoping: from the Chaozhou old city it is a long stretch of hill road, and the round trip takes more time than the tower. Stay a night; do not go and return the same day.
- Chen Cihong Residence is provincially protected, not nationally. It is not among Shantou’s six national sites, so do not check it against that list; whether it is worth going has nothing to do with grade.
Five checks before setting out
- Hours and tickets: they differ by site and change often; this page lists only the most asked about, since anything written down expires. Guangji Bridge, for instance, is 20 yuan one way, and coming back means buying again.
- Bookings and caps: vehicles entering Nan ao must book; some protected sites require booking or cap numbers, so re-check a week before a holiday.
- Festival periods: god parades in the first month, opera in the second, Yulan in the seventh — the best time for folk custom and the worst for traffic. Accept the crowds if you want the rites; avoid them if you want quiet.
- Photography: in religious buildings, inner halls and before images, ask before photographing. That is not politeness but the rule.
- Weather: spring and summer are wet and stone bridges and hill paths slippery; typhoons come in summer and autumn, so leave margin on island days.
Re-check these five daily; the method and entry points are on Three minutes before you set off.

Nan ao entry booking: Shantou Nan ao Bridge Construction Management Centre, notice on adjusting booking bands, 2 October 2026; bands 0—6, 6—10, 10—14, 14—18, 18—24.
Chen Cihong Residence: Qianmei village, Longdu, Chenghai; 25,400 square metres, 506 rooms; a Guangdong provincial protected site.
De an Li: Hongyang, Puning; Fang Yao’s residence, about 40,000 square metres; sources give 733 or 888 rooms, and this page says over seven hundred.
Guangji Bridge: 20 yuan, one way; sales stop, boarding stops and pontoons apart are three separate times, set by the bridgehead notice of the day. The TripAdvisor listing says 8:00—17:00, which differs from the bridgehead, so this page follows the bridge.
Light show: 20:00, about ten minutes, with a 21:30 extra at weekends and holidays, per the site notice.
